Summary

Heath Village is one of the oldest retirement communities in New Jersey with buildings dating from the 1960’s through the 1990’s. Over the past 20 years Heath Village has been keeping their facilities current and relevant through an annual master plan assessment that has led to upgrade and improvement projects. A complete makeover of the dining venue portion of the community center and associated outdoor living areas was needed to increase opportunities for socialization and encourage an active lifestyle.

Before

Inspired Design

The mountain setting and surrounding landscape, as well as the desire for improved socialization, served as the inspiration for the design. In order to reinvigorate the social life of the community, a radical makeover was implemented, including the removal of buildings, the addition of dining venues and activities as well as the transformation of outdoor spaces. The renovation and reconfiguration increase opportunities for socializing, provide multiple dining options, maximize daylight, enhance views of the mountains and create all-season outdoor living spaces.

Style

The challenge was to renovate the disparate existing buildings with a fresh design language that can be continued throughout the campus on future projects. The team achieved this goal by simplifying some of the building forms and introducing visually rich elements, pleasing colors and residential detailing that supports comfort and encourages activity.

Materials

Patrick Brady, CEO of Heath Care Alliance, wanted the community to have an updated lodge-like feel. The design uses the original stone from the Schooley Mountain site along with the introduction of warm cherry wood millwork and aged brass detailing. Heath Village has always had a simple approach to the design of their community – timeless design with a warm and inviting appeal.
